SRAM Apex Rear Derailleur Review

SRAM Apex Rear Derailleur

  • Speeds Mid 32T cage RD offer wider gearing than triple (11-32T with 5034T crankset)
  • Exact Actuation makes 10 speeds shifting smooth and quiet
  • Set up is faster and durability is increaed with our patented Actuation ratio
  • Apex Derailleur is both lightweight and very durable
  • Weight 190g – Mid 32T rear

Along with the wide-ratio cassette options, the Apex Rear Derailleur is a big part of SRAM’s WiFli 2 x 10 speed road shifting system. It stands for Wider, Faster, Lighter. The premise is… why ride with the extra complexity and weight of a triple crank, when you’ll have redundant gear ratios across the chainrings anyway? Sure, the folks at SRAM know that many of us want to have a mountain goat style granny gear and something to crank out at high speed as well. That’s the reason for WiFli. A wide-ratio cassette coupled to a double crank can, in reality, get you all the gear range you’ll need to conquer both mountain passes and city limit sprints with equal aplomb. The SRAM Apex Rear Derailleur is designed to accommodate the 11-32t 10-speed Apex PG-1050 Cassette. Of course, it will work with all other SRAM 10-speed cassettes as well. It works in harmony with SRAM’s Exact Actuation DoubleTap Shifters to make crisp, flawless shifts time and again. The body of the derailleur is aluminum alloy, with the cage plates being made of aluminum for the outer and durable steel for the inner. The jockey wheels are supported on bearings for smooth function and long life. It is available in two cage length configurations — short (handles up to 28t cassette) and mid (up to 32t cassette).Exact Actuation delivers precise 3mm shifts with each click for clean, reliable shifting Aluminum inner cage for added durability Aluminum outer cage for reduced weight and increased stiffness Available in medium and short cages for varying gear ratios

The X.0s shifting pawl is always engaged for Zero Loss Travel, and 1:1 Actuation moves the derailleur one gear for every unit of cable pulled or released. The result? Quick, effortless, and reliable shifting, time and time again.

Other than the Double Tap shift lever, perhaps no component in the SRAM road component family represents a greater departure from familiar mechanical territory than the Force Rear Derailleur. It’s a bit of a technical story, but it’s one whose benefits are evident the first time you run through your gears: You’ll experience crisper, more precise shifting than you’ve ever felt before.Virtually every rear derailleur you’ve ever used pre-Force is built around 3 springs: The B-position spring, the pivot spring, and the parallelogram spring. What SRAM learned as they developed their rear derailleur, though, was that a 2-spring system built with more powerful springs outperforms the 3-spring standard. By eliminating the B-position spring and fixing your derailleur’s B-position in place, the Force derailleur better manages the gap between the guide pulley and your cassette cog. The stout strength of the springs is directly related to the inherent mechanical advantage of the Force Double Tap shifter. Strength requires strength, and it results in punchy, quick shifts. The other half of the story is SRAM’s Exact Actuation technology. Most rear derailleurs pull slightly different amounts of cable depending on which end of the gearing spectrum they’re in. You can feel this when the first few cogs of your non-SRAM system shift perfectly, and then the shifts are off. With Exact Actuation, the Force derailleur pulls the same amount of cable (and thereby moves the derailleur the same distance) with every click, no matter what gear you’re in. Each click gives you a predictable 3mm of cable pull. Thanks to the 2-spring design and Exact Actuation, the Force rear derailleur is perhaps the most user-friendly derailleur we’ve ever seen.

SHIMANO RD-M986 XTR Shadow Plus 10 Speed Rear Derailleur Review

SHIMANO RD-M986 XTR Shadow Plus 10 Speed Rear Derailleur

  • Shadow Plus technology keeps the low profile shape reducing chainstay and other contact, and adds a chain tensioning device reducing noise and dropped chains
  • Cage features carbon outer plate with aluminum inner plate for ideal combination between light weight and stiffness
  • Stiff return spring and revised cable pull for consistent, positive shifting feel
  • Sealed bearing pulleys
  • Direct mount frame compatible

Shimano’s M986 XTR Shadow Plus rear derailleur is a game changer. The innovative motion damping switch allows you to virtually lock out the bottom pulley of the derailleur, eliminating chain throw, chain slap, and extraneous drivetrain noise — in other words the drivetrain issues you have while riding rough trails at high speed. Simply flip the switch to its -Inchoff-Inch setting to remove the wheel or fine tune the shifting. Combine that with the unobtrusive Shadow derailleur profile, improved cable pull ratio and sealed top and bottom pulleys and you get the paragon of all-mountain derailleurs.

SHIMANO Dura-Ace RD-9000 11-Speed Rear Derailleur Review

SHIMANO Dura-Ace RD-9000 11-Speed Rear Derailleur

  • Fast and accurate shifting
  • 11-speed design
  • Maximum sproket 28t
  • More equal shifting effort through the range

While 11-speeds are amazing, to be perfectly honest, we’d be just as excited to have the Shimano Dura-Ace RD-9000 11-Speed Rear Derailleur in an 8-speed iteration. The reason is simple — the RD-9000 is the physical form of everything that we love about Dura-Ace. Persistent innovation, superior reliability, and near-perfect shift quality — these are the hallmarks of Dura-Ace, and they’re all presented here, with the RD-9000. In even plainer speak — this is Shimano’s finest mechanical rear derailleur to date. To start, we should explain Dura-Ace 9000’s main shifting goal — easier action with a shorter stroke at the lever. To achieve this, it required a revision of the leverage points on the derailleur’s body. You’ll notice that RD-9000’s cable anchor bolt rests at more of a forward angle than on 7900. This not only creates more leverage, but it also strengthens the pull, eases the actuation, and thus helps lessen the shift stroke. For this iteration of Dura-Ace, you can also expect to see the return of the carbon cage and p-body. The construction complements the beautiful forging and assists in 9000’s six gram weight reduction, but mainly, the carbon reduces vibratory interference and produces a light, crisp shift over the cassette. In fact, Shimano fanatics will immediately notice the focus paid to making a slight alteration to the feel of the shift. As we all know, Dura-Ace tends to snap the chain up the cassette, but it feels like it drops the chain from cog-to-cog on the way down. Now, the RD-9000 creates an equal, positive sensation regardless of the direction of your shift, or the size of the sprocket that you’re shifting to. And we’ll tell you now, that you have a large cluster at your disposal. Not only can you expect to apply an equal lever-force at the top and bottom of the cassette, but the Dura-Ace rear derailleur can handle up to a 28 tooth sprocket.

SHIMANO 105 ST-5700 STI Shifters Review

SHIMANO 105 ST-5700 STI Shifters

It’s tempting to refer to Shimano’s 105 group as its value-oriented setup. But, that would grossly understate its appeal. From both an aesthetics and nuts-and-bolts standpoint, 105 has it where it counts. Generations of aspiring racers have cut their Cat. Four and Three chops with 105, while many dedicated riders feel no reason to upgrade beyond it. Why? Because it works flawlessly. And year after year, it provides much of the same quality and durability of Shimano’s pricier groups at a price that saves room in your build budget for, say, carbon wheels. So, when we look at the Shimano 105 ST-5700 STI Shifters (command central for the next generation of 105), we see a continuation of this impressive legacy. We’ve grown accustomed to Shimano’s constant drive to reinvent and improve. As such, we’re not surprised that the 105 ST-5700 STI Shifters have been re-engineered, and generously endowed, with trickle-down technology from both Ultegra and Dura-Ace. One such element is its Super SLR Design. Basically, Shimano relocated the brake lever pivot to make it easier and more comfortable to brake with your hands on the hoods. This makes sense, given that many riders spend most of their time up on the hoods. Also, like Ultegra 6700 and Dura-Ace 7900 shifters, 105 5700 shifters feature internal cable routing for a cleaner, more aerodynamic front end. Another feature that’s been pulled in is the shifters’ reach adjustment, which was accomplished with shims that reduce reach by either 5 or 10mm. Shimano also gave the 105 Shifters aluminum levers instead of carbon fiber levers. This increases its weight a tad over Ultegra and Dura-Ace, but it also knocks a considerable amount off of the price. The left shifter in this set handles a double chainring setup, and the right shifter is designed to work with Shimano 10-speed rear derailleurs. Shimano indicates that the 105 ST-5700 STI Shifters are upward-compatible with Ultegra 6700 and Dura-Ace 7900 brakes.
