Maxxis set out to craft a tire that would loyally lead wherever you tell it to go — in most cases, down muddy, rocky, technical descents — and the result is the burly Minion DHF 3C/EXO/TR Tire. Constructed specifically for aggressive enduro riding, the Minion was made to blast through a range of trail conditions and terrain, and like its namesake, to loyally stick with you while you’re sticking challenging lines. The Minion’s triple compound construction suits it to rugged, enduro rides. It relies on a firm, durable base layer topped by two progressively softer layers to keep the tires glued to the trail when conditions get slippery and loose. We like the way the softer layers pair with the mix of directionally ramped center knobs and tall, channel-cut knobs along the sides to keep rolling resistance low on fast straightaways but grab quickly in tight corners. Between the dependable 60 TPI casing and the tubeless-ready construction, you can also count on the Minion to not bail if you hit an occasional rock or frequent rock gardens. With this mix of features, whether you’re riding through mud, loose dirt, or any messy mix of conditions, we’d count on this tire to barrel through it all without hesitation.

An ancient shredder once said “Going fast isn’t the main thing, it’s the only thing.” Wise words, and Maxxis took them to heart when it designed the (slightly) new Minion DHF Wide Trail 3C/EXO/TR 27. 5in Tire. The Minion DHF Wide tire is made to rally with an updated tread pattern that serves up more grip when mounted on wider rims without making you lay your rig on its side. It goes without saying that the Minion DHF can be run tubeless, which means lower PSI and more grip, and that it’s EXO casing can hammer down the fastest, sharpest trails without taking a killer hit. Finally, note that the Maxx Grip compound is softer and mores responsive to braking than the harder, fast-rolling Maxx Terra.

No single tire can be a perfect match for every trail surface, but if there’s one we’d say comes close, it’s the Maxxis Minion DHF. Excelling on everything from fast sun-baked singletrack and blown-out silty corners, to wet rocks and slippery roots, the Minion DHF Wide Trail Dual Compound/EXO/TR Tire is a staple for a wide range of aggressive terrain. It’s been around in various sizes and casings for many years, and for a good reason–it just works. Here at the office it’s our go-to front tire for the dry and loose conditions found across Utah, but we keep it on for the slightly wetter early-spring and late-fall riding as well. For aggressive trail and all-mountain riding the Minion DHF is a worthy companion for the front of your bike, but it works well as a rear tire too. The Minion DHF has pronounced tread, but the center knobs are ramped to keep the rolling resistance low. For such a burly tire it rolls impressively well. The side knobs grip adeptly on loose berms and flat hard pack turns alike, inspiring confidence in cornering. Alternating rows of the knobs are channel-cut to increase the surface area under load, further improving straight line control and overall traction. This version of the tire has a Wide Trail casing, optimizing the tread profile for 30-35mm internal width rims. It uses the Dual Compound rubber, which is harder than 3C but also lasts notably longer. This is a single-ply casing with EXO sidewall protection to fend off flats from rock slices. It’s one of Maxxis’ lighter weight versions of the DHF, but still offers substantial puncture protection.

Maxxis Minion DHF EXO/TR Tire Review

Maxxis Minion DHF EXO/TR Tire

  • Compound: dual compound
  • Size: 29 x 2.3 in, 29 x 2.5 in
  • Type: tubeless
  • Casing: single-ply
  • Protection: EXO

Something of a fixture on the trails in the past few years, the Maxxis Minion, in all it’s various iterations, has been living up to its name famously since its creation. Nimbler than its Highroller II Sibling and scrappy enough to stay standing through loose, white-knuckle sections of trail, we’d reach for the 29in Minion DHF EXO/TR Tire gladly on days that challenge us to stay engaged through every mile. As we mentioned, the Minion comes in different combinations of compounds and casings; this version is equipped with a dual compound rubber construction to give it speed on smooth singletrack or the occasional fire road, with dependable grip and traction when the going gets rougher and switchbacks appear. To give you the confidence to take on bumps and bruises and a few bigger-than-intended hits, this Minion also comes with the reassurance of Maxxis EXO protection beefing it up. Finally, a collection of squared off, ramped knobs are responsible for grabbing onto the trail and digging in, arranged strategically to give you traction while cornering without slowing you down too much on the straightaways and descents. The Minion’s far from the speediest tire in existence, but it’s not trying to be the fastest. Staying efficient on the smooth stuff and being ready to dive in when things get messy is the Minion DHF’s mission, and it does so with aplomb.
