Shimano’s dominant position in the bike industry is based foremost on one simple fact: They can forge metals with a creativity and sophistication far beyond anything their competitors can dream. Shimano factories are crammed with VW Bug-sized forging machines that spend all day long pounding alloys into highly precise little bits that — after final assembly — make a Dura-Ace bike brake and shift and look so fine. Shimano = Forging. It’s as simple as that, and that’s the reason why they long resisted the temptation to wander into the world of carbon. The rest of the industry, of course, embraced carbon with an untrammeled cheek-to-cheek, two-arms-and-two-legs enthusiasm, and while they were at it, they accused Shimano of being a fuddy-duudy for not doing the same. Shimano’s position was simple: Anything carbon can do, forged metal can do better — lightness, durability, cost, you name it.Still, there’s something cosmetically sexy about carbon. And market trends are what they are — consumers vote with their wallets, and they’re choosing carbon. With the Dura-Ace 7900 series components, Shimano proves that while they may move deliberately, they are most definitely not fuddy-duddies. Case in point, the Dura-Ace RD-7900 rear derailleur –The Dura-Ace RD-7900 is Shimano’s first ever rear derailleur that makes use of carbon fiber. The pulley cage and P-body are both made of carbon to shave off 16g in comparison to the RD-7800 rear derailleur. Shimano states that their choice of carbon vs. alloy here has no detrimental effect to long-term durability of the derailleur. And while the carbon vs. alloy debate has a timelessness to it akin to Red Sox vs. Yankees, there’s something else going on with the RD-7900 that — at least to us — is far bigger news: It has an expanded chain wrap capacity in comparison to the RD-7800. What’s chain wrap capacity? It’s a simple math equation: (Big ring – Small ring) + (Big cog – Small cog) = Chain Wrap Capacity.

Where do we start? The Shimano XT RD M786 Shadow Plus Rear Derailleur has so much going for it we’re almost at a loss for words. Almost. Let’s start with Shimano’s new direct mounting system. If your frame is relatively new, chances are you’ll be able to mount the RD-M786 without using a hanger. That means less flex, less wear, lighter weigh and fast and simple wheel changes with thru axles. If your bike still uses a hanger, no worries, because the XT Shadow Plus RD-M786 rear derailleur comes with a removable B-Link that’s pre-installed for use with hangers. <p>Another feature we like is the XT Shadow Plus rear derailleur’s new clutch system. A trickle-down bit of technology that debuted in the XTR Shadow Plus rear derailleur, it makes shifting easier, more consistent and quieter by allowing you to increase spring tension with the flip of a switch. If you’ve been experiencing the occasional dropped chain on your full-suspension rig, this feature’s going to be worth its weight in gold. </p> <p>In the more-of-the-same department (and we mean that in a good way), the RD-M786 retains all of the features that made the previous version one of our favorite rear derailleurs–strong and lightweight aluminum construction throughout, direct cable path routing and the Shadow’s impact-reducing low-profile design. The 10 speed Shimano 5700A 105 rear derailleur integrates the wide link design prominently featured in both Dura Ace and Ultegra derailleurs to not only promote quick shifting, but to preserve the pivots for greater durability and long term crisp shifting performance. It also features the ability to accept wide range 30t cassettes. The new derailleur is available in both short and medium cage lengths for double, compact, or triple crank configurations.

Shimano’s move to 11-speed MTB has been about more than just adding another cog. It’s about fundamentally redesigning the way the entire system shifts to make it smoother, crisper, and more reliable. The all-new Deore XT M8000 shifters have been completely redesigned from the last generation to provide a simple, adaptable cockpit with the latest technology. Shift feel has been reengineered to be 20% for the rear, meaning far less force is required to shift the chain. A longer lever body gives you more leverage to work with, further enhancing the feel and ease of shifting. The internal mechanism has been completely redesigned for consistently stable shifting that will shift perfectly every time, and require none of the odd little “nudges” to get the chain into gear. This is coupled with an all-new shift cable and house with hyper low-friction coatings. If you’ve been jealous of your 11-speed-convert friends, but just haven’t wanted to smash the piggy bank open to buy a new groupset, the new Shimano 105 5800 group is what you’ve been waiting for. The 105 ST-5800 11-Speed STI Shifters feature technology that has trickled all the way down from Shimano’s Dura-Ace line, but in a more affordable package. The first thing you’ll notice about the 5800 group is that, yes, it does have 11-speeds. Drawing from the popularity of the Dura-Ace and Ultegra groups, the 5800 is now compatible with the new and improved CS-5800 for a full range of 22 gears. Unlike the last iteration of 105, the new STI shifters feature a more compact and streamlined lever that fits into your hand. It is also adjustable for reach so that your hand-to-brake interface is secure. The shifting mechanism itself draws inspiration from Shimano’s top-tier groups, with shorter strokes and polymer cables for faster, more accurate shifting. The biggest noticeable difference between the 105 shifters and their big brothers is that the levers are alloy rather than carbon construction. This, as well as alloy verses lighter weight titanium bolts, increases the weight of the shifters a bit from the top-tier models. The Shimano 105 ST-5800 11-Speed STI Shifters come in one color and are available as Left, Right, or as a Set.
