The kitchen-utensil inspiration behind Crank Brother’s mud-clearing pedal design knows no finer expression than the Eggbeater 11 Pedals. With the exception of the stainless steel spring, every bit of steel on the other Eggbeaters — body, spindle, and wing — is replaced with cycling’s lightweight wonder metal, titanium. They still relish in the slop of trail life, but they approach that slop with the same aloof superiority that a three-star chef might exhibit while indulging a craving at a taco chain. Thanks to the four-sided wing of the Eggbeater 11, it’s virtually impossible to not clip in as soon as the bottom of your shoe hits the pedal. The Eggbeater wing facilitates this operation by rotating under pressure to quickly and smoothly engage the cleat. Despite the Eggbeater 11’s low weight and ease of use, the platform’s real strength is the lack of a, well, a platform. The pedal’s open design leaves nowhere for muck to grab onto, so that easy clip-in action is just as easy in three-star mud conditions. The included brass cleats recess flush with the tread on the bottom of your shoes for easy walking, and they’re designed for two release angles (15 or 20 degrees) depending on which cleat you bolt to which shoe. Crank Brothers recommends the 15-degree setting if you’re new to clipless, but going for the gusto with the 20-degree configuration will allow more body english on the bike without the worry of an accidental release. Needle and cartridge bearings keep the Eggbeater 11 Pedals spinning smoothly and represent a marked improvement compared to the bushings used on OG Eggbeaters. When the time does come for an overhaul, you can take solace in the fact that nobody else’s pedals are as easy to service as Crank Brothers’. The pedals include protective shims and all the hardware required for installation. Please Note: Crankbrothers recommends a 200lb (90kg) rider weight limit for the Eggbeater 11 Pedals.

The bearings, including the Igus internals and enduro cartridge external bearings, are housed in a light, durable aluminum inner body and double-sealed to make sure mud, rocks, and grit don’t get in the way of the pedals’ ability to spin smoothly. For added ride customization, you’ll find six adjustable traction pins on each side for sure-footed confidence, especially if you unclip before a no-fall zone or an especially treacherous section of trail.

Revamped with an 11. 7 percent increase in pedal-to-shoe contact over its PD-M785 predecessor, the Shimano XT PD-M8020 Trail Pedal provide supreme stability for conquering formidable stretches of trail. The 3. 3 millimeter wider profile over the previous iteration makes the M8020 Trail Pedal even more competent in wild terrain, facilitating quick engagement without endlessly searching for the pedal platform. Other than the slightly wider surface, the M8020 Trail Pedal retains the bombproof characteristics of the legendary PD-M785 with cro-moly construction and sealed cartridge bearings. Shimano’s SPD pedals have been around forever and, aside from a few additions here and there, have remained pretty much unchanged. The reason is simple: Shimano got it right the first time. The M530 still uses Shimano’s tried-and-true SPD retention system, but it incorporates a larger platform to add a bit of support in gnarly sections of trail where you’re tossed around. The M530 SPD MTB pedal incorporates the same smart features that SPDs have incorporated for years. The dual-sided pedals make clipping in a snap. Sealed cartridge bearings make them pretty-much maintenance-free, although if you need to take them apart to clean and grease the internals, it can still be done without any SPD-specific tools. Finally, there’s the tension adjustment, which is why many believers have been riding SPDs for years. With a 3mm Allen wrench, you can adjust the release tension of your pedals, so you can customize the feel to your exact comfort level.
