  • Fast and accurate shifting
  • 11-speed design
  • Maximum sproket 28t
  • More equal shifting effort through the range

While 11-speeds are amazing, to be perfectly honest, we’d be just as excited to have the Shimano Dura-Ace RD-9000 11-Speed Rear Derailleur in an 8-speed iteration. The reason is simple — the RD-9000 is the physical form of everything that we love about Dura-Ace. Persistent innovation, superior reliability, and near-perfect shift quality — these are the hallmarks of Dura-Ace, and they’re all presented here, with the RD-9000. In even plainer speak — this is Shimano’s finest mechanical rear derailleur to date. To start, we should explain Dura-Ace 9000’s main shifting goal — easier action with a shorter stroke at the lever. To achieve this, it required a revision of the leverage points on the derailleur’s body. You’ll notice that RD-9000’s cable anchor bolt rests at more of a forward angle than on 7900. This not only creates more leverage, but it also strengthens the pull, eases the actuation, and thus helps lessen the shift stroke. For this iteration of Dura-Ace, you can also expect to see the return of the carbon cage and p-body. The construction complements the beautiful forging and assists in 9000’s six gram weight reduction, but mainly, the carbon reduces vibratory interference and produces a light, crisp shift over the cassette. In fact, Shimano fanatics will immediately notice the focus paid to making a slight alteration to the feel of the shift. As we all know, Dura-Ace tends to snap the chain up the cassette, but it feels like it drops the chain from cog-to-cog on the way down. Now, the RD-9000 creates an equal, positive sensation regardless of the direction of your shift, or the size of the sprocket that you’re shifting to. And we’ll tell you now, that you have a large cluster at your disposal. Not only can you expect to apply an equal lever-force at the top and bottom of the cassette, but the Dura-Ace rear derailleur can handle up to a 28 tooth sprocket.

Shimano XTR CS-M9001 11-Speed 11-40T Mountain Bike Cassette for Triple Review

Shimano XTR CS-M9001 11-Speed 11-40T Mountain Bike Cassette for Triple

  • Cog Sizes: 11 – 40 t
  • Cog Material: [11, 13, 15, 17, 40] steel, [19, 21, 24, 27, 31, 35] titanium
  • Carrier Material: carbon fiber
  • Claimed Weight: 331 g
  • Recommended Use: mountain biking

The Shimano XTR CS-M9000 11-speed Cassette uses computer-designed teeth and gates to ensure that your chain is able to smoothly shift across the entire range. The four carriers are carbon fiber and the range is from 11-40 teeth. To reduce weight, the 19,21,24,27,31, and 35t cogs are machined from titanium. This was done to decrease weight and increase durability. All of the cogs have also been drilled to further reduce weight. But don’t worry, no strength was compromised in the machined designs. As far as usability, the M9000 fits on 8-, 9-, and 10-speed hubs in addition to 11-speed. It is designed to work with a standard dual chainring, but has been thoughtfully designed to accommodate a single one-by configuration as well.

It’s tempting to refer to Shimano’s 105 group as its value-oriented setup. But, that would grossly understate its appeal. From both an aesthetics and nuts-and-bolts standpoint, 105 has it where it counts. Generations of aspiring racers have cut their Cat. Four and Three chops with 105, while many dedicated riders feel no reason to upgrade beyond it. Why? Because it works flawlessly. And year after year, it provides much of the same quality and durability of Shimano’s pricier groups at a price that saves room in your build budget for, say, carbon wheels. So, when we look at the Shimano 105 ST-5700 STI Shifters (command central for the next generation of 105), we see a continuation of this impressive legacy. We’ve grown accustomed to Shimano’s constant drive to reinvent and improve. As such, we’re not surprised that the 105 ST-5700 STI Shifters have been re-engineered, and generously endowed, with trickle-down technology from both Ultegra and Dura-Ace. One such element is its Super SLR Design. Basically, Shimano relocated the brake lever pivot to make it easier and more comfortable to brake with your hands on the hoods. This makes sense, given that many riders spend most of their time up on the hoods. Also, like Ultegra 6700 and Dura-Ace 7900 shifters, 105 5700 shifters feature internal cable routing for a cleaner, more aerodynamic front end. Another feature that’s been pulled in is the shifters’ reach adjustment, which was accomplished with shims that reduce reach by either 5 or 10mm. Shimano also gave the 105 Shifters aluminum levers instead of carbon fiber levers. This increases its weight a tad over Ultegra and Dura-Ace, but it also knocks a considerable amount off of the price. The left shifter in this set handles a double chainring setup, and the right shifter is designed to work with Shimano 10-speed rear derailleurs. Shimano indicates that the 105 ST-5700 STI Shifters are upward-compatible with Ultegra 6700 and Dura-Ace 7900 brakes.

The 3. 3 millimeter wider profile over the previous iteration makes the M8020 Trail Pedal even more competent in wild terrain, facilitating quick engagement without endlessly searching for the pedal platform. Other than the slightly wider surface, the M8020 Trail Pedal retains the bombproof characteristics of the legendary PD-M785 with cro-moly construction and sealed cartridge bearings. Two-sided engagement makes easy work of clipping in, especially after dismounting across steep uphill sections and technical stretches.
