Shimano’s SPD pedals have been around forever and, aside from a few additions here and there, have remained pretty much unchanged. The reason is simple: Shimano got it right the first time. The M530 still uses Shimano’s tried-and-true SPD retention system, but it incorporates a larger platform to add a bit of support in gnarly sections of trail where you’re tossed around. The M530 SPD MTB pedal incorporates the same smart features that SPDs have incorporated for years. The dual-sided pedals make clipping in a snap. Sealed cartridge bearings make them pretty-much maintenance-free, although if you need to take them apart to clean and grease the internals, it can still be done without any SPD-specific tools. Finally, there’s the tension adjustment, which is why many believers have been riding SPDs for years. With a 3mm Allen wrench, you can adjust the release tension of your pedals, so you can customize the feel to your exact comfort level.

Traditionally, Shimano’s brakes have used a single-pivot design, but the Ultegra 6800 uses a dual pivot, which allows the caliper to be placed symmetrically over the tire. Combined with a cable that runs directly out of the middle of the caliper, this gives the 6800 balanced tension, so braking forces are distributed evenly to both sides of the caliper for smoother, more reliable braking. The arms feature a friction-reducing twin bearing system that allows them to pivot extremely smoothly, so you get instant and sensitive feedback from even light touches to your brake levers. Shimano also designed the Ultegra 6800’s arms to lie closer to the rim, which provides more sensitivity with less effort. Feathering your brakes will be a silky smooth experience, and hard braking won’t require the grip strength of a gorilla. Even the new brake cables have smooth low-friction design. The Ultegra 6800 is also set up to accommodate thin brake pads, perfect for riders rocking wider 28mm tires.

Where do we start? The Shimano XT RD M786 Shadow Plus Rear Derailleur has so much going for it we’re almost at a loss for words. Almost. Let’s start with Shimano’s new direct mounting system. If your frame is relatively new, chances are you’ll be able to mount the RD-M786 without using a hanger. That means less flex, less wear, lighter weigh and fast and simple wheel changes with thru axles. If your bike still uses a hanger, no worries, because the XT Shadow Plus RD-M786 rear derailleur comes with a removable B-Link that’s pre-installed for use with hangers. <p>Another feature we like is the XT Shadow Plus rear derailleur’s new clutch system. A trickle-down bit of technology that debuted in the XTR Shadow Plus rear derailleur, it makes shifting easier, more consistent and quieter by allowing you to increase spring tension with the flip of a switch. If you’ve been experiencing the occasional dropped chain on your full-suspension rig, this feature’s going to be worth its weight in gold. </p> <p>In the more-of-the-same department (and we mean that in a good way), the RD-M786 retains all of the features that made the previous version one of our favorite rear derailleurs–strong and lightweight aluminum construction throughout, direct cable path routing and the Shadow’s impact-reducing low-profile design. With a maximum chainwrap capacity of 35T, the Shimano XT Shadow Plus is ideal for 2X10 setups. </p>
